SARA-Recognized Institution

On June 22, 2015, New Mexico State University (NMSU) became a SARA-Recognized Institution and a member of the National Council of State Authorization Reciprocity Agreements (NC-SARA). Thus, NMSU abides by the national standards for the interstate offering of distance education (DE) courses and programs. Being a SARA-Recognized Institution increases access to NMSU distance education for students from other states and territories.

NMSU State Authorization

If you physically reside outside New Mexico and are currently enrolled in or are planning to enroll in a Distance Education (DE) program at NMSU Global Campus, the following State Authorization information applies to you.

State Authorization does not apply to NMSU Las Cruces campus students from other states who take online courses while living in Las Cruces, nor does it apply to students taking online and face-to-face courses in combination.

Before you can enroll in an NMSU distance education program or course, NMSU must be authorized in your state to offer distance education. Please note for distance education  programs with internships, clinicals, and practicums, additional state restrictions may apply for which NMSU might not be authorized.

Exempt – Students in these states can enroll in NMSU’s Distance Education programs.

Limited – Students in these states can enroll in some of NMSU’s Distance Education programs. NMSU may not be approved to offer some DE programs with internships, clinicals, or practicums. You will need to review the requirements of the DE  program and your state’s status information to determine if you can enroll.

As a SARA-Approved Institution, NMSU can offer DE programs and courses to Alaska residents except for nursing programs that require clinicals.
As a SARA-Approved Institution, NMSU can offer DE programs and courses to California residents except for nursing programs that require clinicals.
As a SARA-Approved Institution, NMSU can offer DE programs and courses to Colorado residents except for nursing programs that require clinicals. Since the Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) in Leadership and Administration and Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) do require clinicals, Colorado residents cannot apply for these programs.
As a SARA-Approved Institution, NMSU can offer DE programs and courses to Connecticut residents with the exceptions of nursing programs that require clinicals, and educator and principal licensure DE programs. Since NMSU doesn’t have a physical presence in Connecticut, no application is required by the Connecticut Office of Higher Education.
As a SARA-Approved Institution, NMSU can offer DE programs and courses to Delaware residents except for nursing programs that require clinicals. Since the Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) in Leadership and Administration and Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) do not require clinicals, Delaware residents can apply for these programs. At this time, for the other DE nursing programs, which require clinicals, NMSU is not accepting Delaware residents. Also, NMSU’s Master of Social Work program is not currently available to Delaware residents.
As a SARA-Approved Institution, NMSU can offer DE programs and courses to Florida residents except for nursing programs that require clinicals. Since the Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) in Leadership and Administration and Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) do not require clinicals, Florida residents can apply for these programs. At this time, for the other DE nursing programs, which require clinicals, NMSU is not accepting Florida residents.
As a SARA-Approved Institution, NMSU can offer DE programs and courses to Louisiana residents except for nursing programs that require clinicals. Since the Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) in Leadership and Administration and Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) do not require clinicals, Louisiana residents can apply for these programs. At this time, for the other DE nursing programs, which require clinicals, NMSU is not accepting Louisiana residents.
As a SARA-Approved Institution, NMSU can offer DE programs and courses to Maryland residents except for nursing programs that require clinicals. Since the Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) in Leadership and Administration and Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) do not require clinicals, Maryland residents can apply for these programs. At this time, for the other DE nursing programs, which require clinicals, NMSU is not accepting Maryland residents. Also, NMSU’s Master of Social Work program is not currently available to Maryland residents.
As a SARA-Approved Institution, NMSU can offer DE programs and courses to Minnesota residents except for nursing programs that require clinicals. Since the Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) in Leadership and Administration and Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) do not require clinicals, Minnesota residents can apply for these programs. At this time, for the other DE nursing programs, which require clinicals, NMSU is not accepting Minnesota residents.
As a SARA-Approved Institution, NMSU can offer DE programs and courses to New York residents except for nursing programs. At this time, NMSU is not accepting New York residents for any DE nursing programs.
As a SARA-Approved Institution, NMSU can offer DE programs and courses to North Carolina residents except for public health, education, and nursing programs that require clinicals, internships, or practicums. Since the Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) in Leadership and Administration and Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) do not require clinicals, North Carolina residents can apply for these programs. At this time, for the other DE public health and nursing programs, which require clinicals, NMSU is not accepting North Carolina residents.
As a SARA-Approved Institution, NMSU can offer DE programs and courses to Oregon residents except for nursing programs that require clinicals. NMSU’s application with SARA is currently pending to offer certain DE nursing programs to Oregon residents.
As a SARA-Approved Institution, NMSU is in compliance with Tennessee’s regulations to offer programs to Tennessee residents except for nursing DE programs. NMSU has not applied to the Tennessee Board of Health for approval of its DE nursing programs. At this time, NMSU does not accept Tennessee residents for DE nursing programs.
As a SARA-Approved Institution, NMSU can offer DE programs and courses to Texas residents except for nursing programs that require clinicals. NMSU’s application with SARA is currently pending to offer certain DE nursing programs to Texas residents.
As a SARA-Approved Institution, NMSU can offer some Distance Education programs to students in Washington. NMSU has applied to the Washington State Nursing Commission for approval of its DE nursing degree programs. At this time, NMSU does not accept Washington residents for DE nursing programs.
As a SARA-Approved Institution, NMSU can offer DE programs and courses to West Virginia residents except for nursing programs that require clinicals. Since the Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) in Leadership and Administration and Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) do not require clinicals, West Virginia residents can apply for these programs. At this time, for the other DE nursing programs, which require clinicals, NMSU is not accepting West Virginia residents.

*As a SARA-Approved Institution, NMSU is in compliance with regulation to offer programs to residents in the following states: Alabama, Arkansas, Arizona, Georgia, Hawaii, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Maine, Massachusetts, Michigan, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New Mexico, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, South Dakota, Utah, Vermont, Virginia, Wisconsin, Wyoming, and Washington D.C.
