How Miles Launched His Data-Driven Career with an Online Master’s

Miles S. did not have to pause his personal life or his career to pursue a Master of Data Analytics. During the commencement ceremony in December 2024, Miles spoke about his academic journey and how NMSU Global Campus was with him every step of the way.

Pursuing a master’s degree is a significant step for anyone looking for upward mobility in their career. However, before beginning any graduate degree, it’s important for prospective students to research what a degree entails in terms of coursework and program length. ¹ It’s also crucial to consider how that degree program can support long-term career goals and how well it aligns with their daily lives.

For Miles S., who earned his bachelor’s in mathematics at New Mexico State University, this meant finding a graduate program that allowed him to stay close to home in Las Cruces, New Mexico, while also leaving room to travel for work.

“I chose NMSU Global Campus because it allowed me to not only stay in Las Cruces and continue going to school, but when my job required it, traveling and going elsewhere,” Miles explained. “It also allowed me to stay in school and continue my education at this great institution.”

How NMSU Global Campus Helped Miles Overcome Financial Obstacles

Thanks to the New Mexico Opportunity Scholarship, along with a separate mathematical science scholarship, Miles was able to complete his bachelor’s degree “without having to worry about the debt and the financial aspect of school.” ²

When Miles enrolled in his data analytics master’s program at NMSU Global Campus, he found assistance in researching and applying for scholarships and financial aid readily available. ³ This support proved invaluable in helping him complete his online graduate program debt-free.

“Any time that I felt like I was struggling financially, there was always an advisor or a counselor that I could go talk to,” Miles recalled. “They would give me some resources that I could apply for scholarships, and sometimes they would even find the scholarships for me that they thought would be good. It really helped me out. I’m really lucky to be coming out of my master’s degree debt-free — and I really have the NMSU Global Campus to thank for that.”

Beyond financial support, Miles was extremely grateful for the mentorship he received from New Mexico State University staff and faculty, both on campus and online. From reviewing his resumes and cover letters to helping him find jobs to apply for, Miles’ Graduation Team always made him feel supported. ⁴ At NMSU Global Campus, he did not have to worry about time zones or long-distance education becoming obstacles to his learning.

“The flexibility of NMSU Global Campus has been awesome,” Miles enthused. “They’ve allowed me to still travel the world and continue my education here. All the teachers and all the faculty, as well as the students and the TAs, have been so flexible in meeting with me and finding ways to fit it into their schedules as well as fit it into mine, even when we aren’t in the same time zones.”

Miles wasn’t the only one to appreciate the comprehensive and continuous support he received during his academic journey. His parents, too, were beyond grateful and impressed at what NMSU Global Campus was able to offer their son.

“It felt like there was always somebody for him to call or email or talk to that could help him problem solve, schedule, tuition, the alignment of his classes,” Miles’s father, Jim, recalled. “It was wonderful. Everything was always taken care of. I have a lot of family in the Midwest, and none of them can believe how much education our children have got without going into debt because of the scholarships that New Mexico State University gave them. And that was just like the cherry on top.”

From completing his bachelor’s degree in person to earning his master’s online, Miles has made his family beyond proud. A Bright Future Ahead for Miles

So, what’s next for our newly minted Master of Data Analytics? Miles shared that he’s already building a career in sales analytics within the beverage industry. “The future for Miles is currently working for Red Bull in Santa Monica, California,” he said. “I’m hoping to continue moving up and working in the sales analytics department and hopefully making an impact there — and anywhere else that my career may take me in the future.”
