Five Stories, One Shared Success: How NMSU Global Campus Supports Learners at Every Stage of Life
Student success doesn’t follow a single path, and it doesn’t have to. From working parents and career changers to first-generation students, veterans, and doctoral candidates, NMSU Global Campus is built to support learners wherever they are, every step of the way.
Behind every online degree is a real person juggling work, family, and big life transitions. These five stories highlight adult learners at NMSU Global Campus who took different paths to higher education, but found the same kind of support on their academic journeys. Together, their experiences show how online learning can open doors at every stage of life.

Bryan, Information and Communication Technology (ICT)
For many adult learners, flexibility isn’t a perk; it’s the only reason college is possible. Bryan F., an undergraduate studying for his online Bachelor of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) degree, returned to school after a 15-year break while working full-time and raising a family. Online learning enabled him to move forward without putting the rest of his life on hold.
“Flexibility was the biggest factor that motivated me to pursue NMSU Global Campus, as I am a non-traditional student,” Bryan says. “I set goals and deadlines to help keep me on track. Working full-time and completing part-time studies at first seemed like a lot. Staying ahead of assignments was the key to enjoying the experience here at NMSU Global Campus.”

Nadine, Education Leadership and Administration
That flexibility is just as essential for Nadine D., a first-generation college student and veteran serving in the New Mexico Army National Guard. She is pursuing an online Master of Arts in Education, Leadership, and Administration while teaching full-time. Nadine relies on online learning to balance her day-to-day responsibilities with professional development as an educator.
“Thanks to the support from NMSU Global Campus, I was able to maintain my focus and attend my classes while still being a vocational teacher [in middle school],” Nadine explains. “This opportunity opens doors I never imagined possible, and I am passionate about being a lifelong learner. I aim to inspire my family and students, showing them that it’s never too late to return to school.”
Carlos, Psychology
Across every program level, students consistently point to one defining factor in their success: people.
Carlos L., a first-generation student pursuing a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology, credits his advisor, professors, and financial aid advisors with helping him navigate higher education with confidence. He also benefited from the New Mexico Opportunity Scholarship, which covers up to 100% of tuition toward a bachelor’s degree (eligibility requirements apply). 2
“I’ve had great support” at NMSU Global Campus, Carlos says. “They have been welcoming and caring to all my questions and concerns, and I am so very grateful for that.”
Mark, Nursing Practice in Psychiatric Mental Health
Mark R. is a Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) student with a Psychiatric/Mental Health Nurse concentration. For him, meaningful relationships extend beyond geography. Mark studies online from Washington, D.C., where he works full-time as a nurse. He has found his advisors at NMSU Global Campus and the expert faculty in NMSU’s School of Nursing to be consistently accessible and invested in his success.
“Friendliness of faculty and the culture that fosters learning and new ideas sets NMSU Global Campus apart from other institutions,” Mark enthuses.
Theodore, Criminal Justice
Theodore P. earned his online Bachelor of Criminal Justice after more than 30 years away from a college campus. Returning to school later in life can feel daunting, but, like other adult learners studying at NMSU Global Campus, he loves the welcoming, supportive online community.
“It feels like home, and it feels like I belong,” Theodore says. “The flexibility and affordability are terrific. It is probably the only way I would be able to attend. My student success mentor was a cornerstone for me. He understood where I was coming from and really grounded me when I was having a tough time in class.”
Theodore appreciates that students are encouraged to bring their full selves — their professional backgrounds, challenges, and goals — into their NMSU classes. “Don’t forget your life experience,” he advises other adult learners. “It will help you.”
